Quick answer

Why do maggots suddenly appear in the house?

Reviewed by the Metro Pest Services team, updated September 2026

Maggots appear when flies have laid eggs on something rotting nearby, often a dead animal in the roof or walls, food waste behind an appliance, or a bin. In warm weather the eggs hatch within about a day and the larvae feed for several days.

When they finish feeding, maggots crawl away from the food to find a dry place to turn into flies. That is why they turn up on floors, carpets and ceilings, some distance from where they hatched.

Clearing the maggots you can see only solves half the problem. Unless the source is found and removed, more eggs are laid, and a new wave of maggots and flies follows within days.

Before you start cleaning

Four maggot clean up mistakes that bring them back

Maggots are unpleasant, so the instinct is to wipe them out and move on. These are the shortcuts that lead to a second wave.

  • 1Sweeping up the maggots without looking for the source, which leaves eggs and more larvae behind.
  • 2Pouring boiling water or bleach into a drain, which rarely reaches the food build up inside the pipe.
  • 3Spraying fly spray into a bin, which kills some maggots but leaves the food waste they were feeding on.
  • 4Ignoring flies at a window afterwards, which usually means the source is still there.

How to deal with maggots safely before we arrive

Maggots and the material they feed on carry bacteria. These steps keep people and pets away from it until the source is removed.

  • Keep children and pets away from the maggots and the area around them
  • Wear gloves, and sweep or vacuum loose maggots into a sealed bag for the bin
  • Do not open up walls or ceilings to look for the source yourself
  • Keep food covered and away from the affected room
  • Wash hands and any tools well after contact
How it works

How our maggot control works

Clear the maggots, find what they came from, and make sure it does not happen again.

1

Trace the source

We follow the maggots, smell, flies and stains to the roof void, wall, floor, bin or drain.

2

Clear the maggots

Maggots and contaminated material are removed in protective gear and bagged.

3

Remove the source

Carcasses, food waste or drain build up are removed, and the area is sanitised.

4

Treat for flies

Remaining larvae and emerging flies are treated, and we advise on keeping the area clear.

Maggots in bins

How to stop maggots in bin areas over summer

Bins are the most common source of maggots in Melbourne homes over the warm months. A few habits stop them.

Wrap it before it goes in

Wrap meat, fish and bones in newspaper or a sealed bag, or freeze scraps until bin day.

Keep the lid closed

Flies only need a few minutes on exposed food to lay eggs. A closed, undamaged lid keeps them out.

Wash the bin

Rinse and dry the bin after collection in summer, and keep it out of direct sun where possible.

What we tell every customer with maggots

01

Maggots are a clue, not the problem

The maggots will turn into flies and leave. What matters is what they were feeding on, and that is what we remove.

02

A few maggots may still appear after

Larvae already on the move can keep turning up for a day or two after the source is removed.

03

Rodent bait in the roof is a common cause

Baited rats and mice often die in the roof void. If maggots follow baiting, ask us about traps and proofing instead.

Questions

Maggots Removal Melbourne FAQs

Not sure where the maggots are coming from? Tell us where you found them and any smell or flies, and we will point you to the likely source.

Call 0401 573 777
How much does maggot removal cost in Melbourne?

With us bin and bin area treatment starts from $149, indoor clear up from $169, and roof void or wall source removal from $249. The price is fixed before we start.

Why are there maggots in ceiling spaces or dropping from lights?

Usually a dead animal in the roof void above. Maggots finish feeding on it and crawl away, dropping through gaps around lights and cornices.

How do I get rid of maggots in bin areas?

Empty and rinse the bin, clean up spilled food waste, keep the lid closed and wrap meat scraps. We can clear and treat heavy infestations.

Where do maggots on the floor come from?

From a nearby food source such as food behind an appliance, pet food, or a dead animal under the floor or in a wall.

Do maggots turn into flies?

Yes. Maggots are fly larvae. After feeding they pupate and emerge as flies, often within a week or two in warm weather.

Can maggots make you sick?

Maggots and what they feed on carry bacteria, so avoid touching them, keep food away and wash hands after any contact.

When should I call a maggot exterminator?

When maggots keep coming back, drop from the ceiling or appear inside with no obvious source.

Does maggot control include finding the source?

Yes. Clearing maggots without removing the source only buys a few days, so finding it is part of every job.

How fast can you come for maggots?

Often the same day if you call before 2pm, depending on your suburb. Maggot jobs get worse quickly in warm weather.

Will bleach kill maggots?

It can kill some on contact, but it does not reach the source or the eggs, and it is not a fix for maggots from a roof or wall.

Do you remove maggots for businesses?

Yes. We clear and treat maggots in commercial kitchens, bin rooms and grease trap areas, often outside trading hours.

How do I stop maggots coming back?

Remove the food source, keep bins closed and clean, fix gaps animals use to get into the roof, and deal with flies early.

Maggots back again this morning?

Maggot removal from $149, the source found and removed, the area sanitised, and a written warranty on the source we removed.
